From a single laptop on a desk in a home office to several high-spec computers in an expensive London office block, small and medium-sized enterprises are all set up differently. In the first four parts of this miniseries, we have explored a number of different points from responsive website design to business telecoms systems, but here we will explore more about ensuring that you have your office IT ready from the outset.
Many business owners would agree that the main goal of most SMEs is to expand and earn more money. However, doing this with a business where the internal processes have not been set up with expansion in mind is tough. The reality is that if you structure your IT correctly from the outset, you will have the tools at your disposal to develop more successfully.
What is scalability, and why is it important to my home business?
Scalability is the ability of a system to grow with your business. It is imperative that you have at least considered the various stages of business growth initially otherwise when your business grows it is likely there will be implementation issues that could have been avoided.
When SMEs are contacted about the scalability of their business, most are worried that they are being sold a service that they do not need, but this is not the case. It may seem sensible to design an IT system that will accommodate up to 10 users, but what happens when you reach 11? Do you struggle on with reduced productivity, or do you write off your initial IT investment and start again on a system for up to 20 users? I don’t like the sound of either and am a strong believer that every system should be designed in such a way that it can scale almost infinitely.
Why is it important for me to have an IT health check?
The answer is simple. The chances are you have little experience with business IT beyond what was put in front of you by your previous employer. It is often difficult to imagine exactly how much was going on behind your desktop PC. There was a whole infrastructure designed to help you work effectively, efficiently and securely. Now that you’re in a position where you need to provide this facility to your employees, you probably need a little bit of help.
At SpecTronics we offer SMEs looking for IT services in London the chance to take advantage of our free IT Health Check. Once completed, we will offer you no obligation advice based on our findings. The health check looks at your network infrastructure, hardware, software, security and the support options currently in place. We will then suggest areas where improvements can be made.
